53. THE ERRANT APPRENTICE:
My dear friend Bill Watkins, whose family came originally from Limerick, penned this wonderful lyric. The brilliant and amusing internal rhyming have been a source of delight for audiences wherever I have sung it. I cracked up when I first read it and went ahead with Bill's request that I should write a tune for it. Gerry O'Beirne suggested an improvement to that tune during recording rehearsals and this is the final result. When I recorded this song I sang "So I'll stick to the soldiers life" as the final line. Since then,  however, I've found that I prefer "So I'll stick to the single life" as a last line. Thanks uncle Bill.
